Before embarking on your search, know your niche.
Understanding where you would like to work in a diverse industry can be quite
tricky. Students often come to us not knowing where their skills lie, and this
is something they discover in training. Are you the type of photographer who
would love to work one-on-one with a subject, creatively producing a portrait
that reflects their personality with your creativity? Or would you adapt to the
fast-paced world of fashion? There are a wide variety of roles, so explore all
career paths and options.
Darren Black, a specialized photojournalist and one of LCS's
tutors as part of our fashion photography course, offers three essential tips
to get you started: A professional level. You will also need a good knowledge
of fashion in general and how to pronounce some of the weird and wonderful
names that you will come across. But you also need a sturdy point of view: You
won't survive long if you're too shy or late to introduce yourself.
So you need experience to help you build your portfolio,
whatever field of photography you want to specialize in.
Firm determination and the right attitude will help you do this. Start applying
for work experience and help the types of photographers whose work you really
admire. Immerse yourself in as much experience as you can, performing creative
and entrepreneurial roles. If it becomes essential, it could lead to paid
assistant roles, which will help you develop your skills at first and allow you
to understand the industry as a whole.
Interacting is vital, so you need to start construction new
contacts as soon as possible. For fashion photographers, one of the best customs
to do this is to make an skilled stylist your best associate. Your work will
only be as stout as the looks and concepts, plus the art of hairstyle and
makeup.
Once you start to establish yourself, you can attend
industry events and fashion weeks, but it can be difficult at first as it
requires an industry profile or posted job. In the beginning, use social media
or blogging to showcase your work and link it to an online portfolio or
website. Follow the hashtags that relate to areas of the photography industry
that you want to pursue, and engage with other creatives where you can.
Developing a strong team is also important,
even for other
photographic careers such as journalism, commercial or portrait photography.
Here, you will need to establish a relationship with galleries, editors,
journalists, modeling agencies, production companies, and possibly agents, to
ensure that your work is appreciated by a wider audience.
As you can see, knowing these industries and knowing how to
approach them is critical. No creative career is completely a one-man show.
